What Is Safe Space Shake & Release?

It is a simple, yet highly effective way to shake & release muscle tension and stress and come back into a state of relief and balance.


How Does It Work?

Think of an animal in the wild, say, a deer. It may be calmly eating one moment and running for its life the next. Yet, if the deer escapes, immediately following the chase it will discharge that powerful fight/flight energy by shaking, jumping, twitching, or making noises. Its muscles will spasm to clear the stress hormones and move them toward elimination. After the discharge the animal returns to normal.

When we humans experience a stressful encounter and the danger has passed, the energy needs to be cleared.  But sometimes, unlike an animal, we humans do not clear the experience right away.  Sometimes if the trigger is too great, or is repeated often, or for some other reason, the moment of stress becomes frozen in the body.  The muscles lock around the feeling of danger and terror, and the stress becomes imprinted.  

A quivering or vibratory motion occurs as our muscles contract and relax due to intention, deep breathing techniques and certain body positions. Once shaking is activated, the innate intelligence within starts a process of unwinding and releasing. This allows for different rhythms and shaking within the body, resulting in a sense of restored balance and relaxation to the body.


How Did Safe Space Shake & Release Come About?

In the late seventies and early eighties Melissa Zollo was working as an actress off-Broadway and then as an acting teacher at the St Nicholas Theatre Company in Chicago. She was also the Artistic Director of the Prison Performing Arts Program in conjunction with the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in CT. At this time, Melissa observed that many performers had deep muscular tension held within their bodies.


“When a weakened individual is unable to shift their energetic mode to the needed frequency, help is needed because an unbalanced body is unable to fulfill its energy contribution, whether to a performance or to life.”


Melissa observed that our body’s innate intelligence had designed it to have an inbuilt physical response to release stress and tension. Similar to our inbuilt impulse to grip, hold, clench and tighten, protecting ourselves from the threat of danger, so too do we also have a way to surrender, let go and release this tension.
